We have just come from the Green Party of the United States'(GPUS) Annual National Meeting at North Carolina Central University (NCCU) in Durham, North Carolina.  The meeting was attended by delegates from over 30 afflliated state Green Parties and caucuses, as well as other party leaders, candidates, officeholders, and observers.   The North Carolina Greens and NCCU did an excellent job hosting us.  We had great places to meet and sleep, wonderful food, and warm hospitality. Those attending commented on how well organized it was, and how inspired they were by the events and sessions.

Friday afternoon, Dr. Jonathan Kotch, Board President of Health Care for All NC and senior faculty member at the UNC Gillings School and of Global Public Health and Dr. Justine McCabe, former co-chair of the Green Party of Connecticut and Ph.D. alumna of Duke University were among those who spoke at a forum on health care reform and the need for a Single-Payer National Healthcare plan.  You can view the video here.
http://www.gp.org/video/durham.shtml On Friday night, Jesse Johnson, of the West Virginia Mountain Party, gave a talk about the catastrophic effects of mountaintop removal by the coal mining industry.  His speech was followed by a screening of the new documentary 'Coal Country: Rising Up Against Mountaintop Removal Mining'.  For more information click here.

Our Saturday session focused on messaging.  Delegates brainstormed and then prioritized issues upon which the party will focus: Single Payer; Food, Water and Energy; and Human Rights.   These messaging priorities will help us develop a clear voice on relevant issues to support our candidates, help frame the political dialogue, and put pressure on those in government to bring us closer to a sustainable world.

Saturday afternoon, Cynthia McKinney addressed meeting attendees via live stream. She discussed her recent efforts with the Free Gaza Movement and Viva Palestina to bring medical and other supplies to Gaza in the wake of Israel's invasion last winter.  She and other Free Gaza activists were aboard the Spirit of Humanity when it was seized by Israeli gunboats (http://www.freegaza.org), but a Viva Palestina convoy succeeded in delivering supplies last week (http://www.vivapalestina.org).  You can view her talk here.

There were great workshops throughout the meeting.  The Green Party Black Caucus hosted several workshops including one focused on ways to advance the Green Party's support for Reparations.  Other workshops covered campaign skills, fundraising, ballot access, candidate recruitment, high speed rail transportation, Green economics, and many more topics.  You can see video of some of the workshops here. During our time together in Durham, we called for an increase in sustainers.  Our goal to support the good work of our party and our messaging campaign is to increase our sustainership level to $10,000 a month from $5,000 and to increase the number of monthly supporters from 250 to 500.  We increased it by $400 a month with 20 people upgrading or signing up at the meeting.  We want to give you an opportunity to be a part of this effort by becoming sustainers or increasing your sustainership.  With your help we can meet the $10,000 per month goal. You can start your sustainer here.

Sustainers are our base of support, enabling us to count upon a base level of income each month to pay our excellent staff, to sustain our Washington DC office, and to support all the good work of the party.  It is also more affordable for most people to spread their donation out monthly.

If you are already a sustainer, please consider increasing your level by as much as you can by contacting Brian Bittner at brian@gp.org or 202-319-7191.  If you are not a sustainer, please consider becoming one by donating here.  Whatever you can afford will help build that base layer of support, helping us to be effective and relevant in our country's political discussion.

If you would prefer or are better able to give a one-time donation, your support will be put to good use as we move forward.  You can donate here.

For Single Payer, Sustainable Food; Clean Water and Energy; and Human Rights,
